En el libro la autora relata sus impresiones de un viaje que hace a México, especialmente a Monterrey en donde permanece por casi un año. Ella está unos días en Saltillo, una semana en San Luis Potosí y unos tres meses en Ciudad de México. The walls had thousands of names carved on their dingy surfaces—names of people from every land—some carved many, many years ago. It is a long steep ascent from the car line to the top of the hill, but this climb is made on burros, which may be hired at the foot of the mountain.” “…el obispado, un edificio antiguo y grande, con salidas y entradas secretas y sangre salpicada en sus paredes que eran señaladas por el guía con horror descrito en su rostro, aunque examinándolas de cerca, las manchas parecen como extraños salpicones de pintura roja. Las paredes tenían miles de nombres grabados en su desgastada superficie –nombre de gente de todas partes- algunos grabados muchos, muchos años atrás. Es un largo tramo cuesta arriba desde la carretera hasta la cima del monte, pero esta cuesta se hace mediante burros que pueden ser contratados al pie de la montaña.
