Description: Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church. Founded on ground purchased by Richard Allen in 1787, this congregation is the mother church of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination. The present structure, erected in 1889, replaces three earlier churches on this site. (Historical Marker at 6th and Lombard Sts. Philadelphia PA - Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission 2010)
