Description: Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, located at 1334 29th Street, N.W., in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Founded in 1816, Mt. Zion UMC is the oldest African American congregation in Washington, D.C. Until the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865, Mt. Zion was a stop on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves. Construction of the Gothic Revival church was completed in 1884. Mt. Zion UMC was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975; in addition, the building is designated as a contributing property to the Georgetown Historic District, listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1967.
