Description: Civil War Veterans Monument (1883) in Mystic, CT. An infantry soldier stands atop a granite base. The granite was quarried in nearby Westerly, RI. The dedication on its front (oriented towards the southwest) face reads: “Dedicated to the brave sons of Mystic who offered their lives to their country in the war of the rebellion, 1861-1865.” Connecticut and United States seals are also inscribed into the front face, which also features a wreath and lists the Battle of Antietam (near Sharpsburg, Md). The left side lists the battle of Port Hudson, La, the back side lists the battle of Gettysburg, Pa, and the right side lists the battle of Drury’s Bluff, Va. The monument was funded by Charles Henry Mallory (1818–1892), the founder of C.H. Mallory & Co., parent company of New York & Texas Steamship Company, who operated a steamship line in New York.
