Description: An inbound NFTA Metro Bus #20 passes along Elmwood Avenue past Kenmore Mercy Hospital in Tonawanda, New York on a late afternoon in May 2021, headed for its terminus at the Buffalo Metropolitan Transportation Center. Located on Elmwood Avenue three blocks south of Sheridan Drive, Kenmore Mercy Hospital is a 315-bed facility that opened in 1951 after five years of intensive community fundraising and was administered for many years by the Sisters of Mercy, the Irish-American Catholic order who also operated the similarly named Mercy Hospital in South Buffalo. The building has been expanded numerous times over the years; the original portion is that which is located behind the current Elmwood Avenue façade of the complex (added in 1996 at a cost of nearly $23 million). It operates today as part of the Catholic Health System of Buffalo.
