Description: Schematic cross-section of the apparatus to observe Newton's rings. A round glass flat and plano-convex lens are pressed together by a metal frame. In an actual apparatus, the curvature of the convex surface is much less than illustrated; an inexpensive commercial apparatus typically has an aperture of 25 mm, and the separation of the two glass pieces near the edge is about 0.01 mm.
