Description: West front of the Old Hall, East Bergholt, Suffolk. This part of a the building is the house of one of four manors in East Bergholt, rebuilt in 1713. From 1857 the house was enlarged to form St Mary's Abbey for a community of Benedictine Nuns. From 1940 the Army occupied and used the buildings. After the war a community of Franciscan Friars lived in it until 1974. Since then it has accommodated a co-ownership housing association of about 42 members plus dependants, who maintain the house and garden and farm about 68 acres of fields from the former estate.
