Description: The (1980s) Olympic Block is seen here beyond the Tlingit totem pole and the Iron Pergola. The current totem pole in this location is a 1930s replica of the original Pioneer Square totem pole, carved in 1790, stolen from a Tlingit village on Tongass Island, Alaska, and erected in Seattle in 1899, which was damaged by arson. It is carved by descendants of the original carvers. The original pergola was designed by Julian F. Everett and built in 1909. The original 1909 Pergola was accidentally knocked over by a truck in January 2001; the restored and reinforced pergola was inaugurated in August 2002.
