Description: A map of the Port Phillip District of New South Wales, as it was in 1840. With the introduction of a fixed-price land sale scheme in that year, the District's northern and eastern borders were extended out to follow the course of the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers, to the source of the latter, and thence to the Pacific coast at Moruya. Note that the precise intended location of the overland section of the border between the Murrumbidgee and Moruya is not known, as the area had not been fully surveyed at the time; accordingly that portion of the border is dashed. The border was retracted later in the year back to the familiar course, the present borders of Victoria. Note that this map is anachronous as it shows rivers lakes and reservoirs as they are today, rather than in 1840.
