Description: Smelter workers walking down Ellen Street, the main street of Port Pirie, at the end of their shift. The BHP smelter was built in 1889 alongside an existing one built by British Broken Hill Blocks mining company. Ahead (under the largest smokestack) are the railway tracks and marshalling yards of the smelters; fanning out to the right are many sidings for goods (mainly agricultural products), to be exported by ships, also visible at right.
