Description: Portsmouth, North Carolina an abandoned village on North Core Banks: U.S. Life-Saving Station build in 1894. During the first 20 years, Keepers and Surfmen in this Station assisted over 85 vessels. The most well known was the rescue of Vera Cruz VII in May 1903, when 421 passengers and crew members were rescued. The station was decommissioned in 1937, but it reopened for a few years during WWII[1].
