Description: The Home Life Insurance Company Building (center) at 256-257 Broadway between Murray and Warren Streets in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City was built in 1892-94 and was designed by the firm of Napoleon LeBrun & Sons, with Pierre LeBrun the architect in charge. The company was founded in Brooklyn in 1860, the first insurance company to be authorized by the New York Insurance Department. They opened a branch at this location in 1866. The new building came about as the result of a design competition, which Le Brun won with this 16-story Renaissance Revival building, one of the earliest steel-framed buildings in New York. The building, the exterior of which is marble, was one of the tallest in the world when it was completed. In 1947, Home bought the building next door – the Postal Telegraph Building (left), originally constructed in 1892-94 for a Western Union competitor and designed by Harding & Gooch – as an annex, and connected the buildings together internally. The two-building complex was designated a NYC landmark in 1991. (Source: Guide to NYC Landmarks (4th ed.) and AIA Guide to NYC (4th ed.))
