Description: On November 22 1980, Prime Minister Robert Muldoon opened the new Rotorua Agrodome. The original agrodome in Rotorua was opened in 1971 by champion shearer Godfrey Bowen and fellow farmer George Harford. In May 1980 a fire destroyed the original agrodome. However, the site did not remain closed for long as was rebuilt and reopened in November 1980. The agrodome remains open today and is a popular tourist attraction. The image shown here is from the personal papers of the late Sir Robert Muldoon who was Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1975 to 1984. This photo, along with photograph albums presented to Robert Muldoon to commemorate official visits and engagements and official and personal correspondence were donated to Archives New Zealand by the late Lady Thea Muldoon, wife of the late Robert Muldoon. Other items of interest in this series of records include: photographs of Muldoon and US President Ronald Reagan; Queen Elizabeth II on the opening of the Beehive in Wellington and a letter of thanks from the Duke of Edinburgh.
