Description: Rougemont Castle Gatehouse, Exeter "The best preserved early Norman gatehouse-keep in the country" (Cherry & Pevsner). They suggest that, although the main rounded arches are clearly typically Norman, "the pair of triangular-headed windows ... suggest the employment of Saxon masons". The local stone (volcanic trap and pale sandstone) gives the building a strong westcountry feel. A notice commemorates the trial here of the last people in England to be hanged (elsewhere in Exeter) for witchcraft, in 1682 and 1685.
