Description: Sable Island Ponies after being unloaded from Steamer, to be sold at Auction – Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, about 1902. After the appointment of a marine superintendent to Sable Island in 1801, horses were routinely shipped off the island and sold at auction in Halifax, as well as in New England and Newfoundland. Valued for their strength and endurance, these small animals were a familiar sight on the streets of Halifax well into the twentieth century.
