Description: Armorials depicted in stained glass window of Bampton Church, Devon, showing arms of Sapcotes of Elton, Huntingdonshire, Sable, three dovecotes argent impaling quarterly of four, 1st & 4th: Gules, four fusils ermine (Dinham), 2nd & 3rd Gules, three pairs of arches argent (Arches, for Sir Richard Arches (d.1417) of Eythorpe, Cranwell and Little Kimble, Buckinghamshire, whose daughter Joan Arches (d.1497) was the wife of Sir John IV Dinham (1406-1458), and thus was Elizabeth Dinham's mother.[1] Elizabeth Dinham (d.1516), 2nd sister and co-heiress of the last Baron Dinham (d.1501),[2] married twice: Firstly to Fulk Bourchier, 10th Baron FitzWarin]][3] (1445–1479),[4] whose will directed his burial to be at Bampton if he should die in England.[5] Secondly to Sir John Sapcotes (d.1501) of Elton, Huntingdonshire. His will, dated at Tawstock, the seat of the Bourchiers, directed that he should be buried in Hartland Abbey, founded by the Dinhams in 1168/9[6] Note the similarity of the arms to those of the family of Shapcott [1] of Shapcott in the parish of Knowstone (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitation of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.677). It appears that the two families were not related. The arms may be canting arms refering to sap, possibly a type of dove.)
