Description: This photo, taken in September, 2010, shows a badly rusted shell trolley running along the length of the ceiling of the northern flank shell room of Battery Kellogg, Pit A. The photo looks west from a point about half way along the 68 foot-long room towards its rolling steel door. The clutter piled along the floor as well as the non-working electric lights are modern additions by the Town of Winthrop. The paneled wooden door visible in the distance is a remnant of a former Halloween "haunted house" that was run in the bunkers. Just through that door, to the left, is a modern concrete wall installed to hold back the dirt fill of Btty Kellogg Pit A, now part of the foundation for a building. The rusty cross pieces in the mid-distance moved the switch that shunted the loaded shell-carrying tongs (not seen here) from one of the steel I-beam tracks on the ceiling to the other. A connecting rod that operates the switch runs down the ceiling to a hand-lever on the wall next to the door. A similar rod and lever can be seen on the left side of the ceiling, controlling a similar switch on I-beam tracks to the left (which is only dimly visible). The brick surface of these rooms was designed to absorb moisture from condensation, helping to keep powder and ammunition dry.
