Description: Statue of Simon Stevin by Louis Eugène Simonis at the Simon Stevinplein in Bruges -- detail. The statue was erected in 1847. Simon Stevin (1548/49 – 1620) was a Flemish mathematician and engineer. He was active in a great many areas of science and engineering, both theoretical and practical. He emigrated to Holland in 1581 and became tutor to Prince Maurice at about 1590. The detail shows experiments on hydrostatic equilibrium. Stevin discovered the hydrostatic paradox -- long before Pascal--, which states that the downward pressure of a liquid is independent of the shape of the vessel, and depends only on its height and base.
