Regular passengerservice was begun on the first half dozen miles out ofCharleston on January15, 1831. Not longafterward the negrofireman on the locomo-tive fastened the safetyvalve shut because hedid not like the noiseof the escaping steam.As a result, the boilerexploded, scalding theengineer severely andinjuring the fireman sothat he died two dayslater. After that thelocomotive was re-garded with suspicion,and for a long time abarrier car piledhigh with cotton baleswas interposed betweenthe engine and the train to protect the passengers.
