Description: Sir Augustus Charles Gregory lying in state, Brisbane, 1905. Sir Augustus Charles Gregory was an English-born Australian explorer who undertook four major expeditions between 1846 and 1858. He was later appointed surveyor-general of Queensland in 1859 and held the position until 1879 when he retired.
