I ON STANE STREET. l37 for 480, 200 and 180-ft. respectively ; across thecultivated lands of Grumber Farm, where its highridge is flanked by a double liedge; across the roughland of the same farm, where it is again marked by ahedge ; and over the high ridge of open Down toGumber Corner on the edge of the escarpment, wlienceit descends to the AVeald along the northern slope ofBignor Hill as a terrace 20 to 135-ft. wide. We liave in the three miles from Seabeach to GumberCorner what is probably the best preserved section ofthe whole of Stane Street, for here it has neither beenaltered by metalling to meet the requirements of moderntraffic, nor wholly obliterated by the plough.
