Description: The Battle Cross This cross was moved here from nearby Boroughbridge where it stood in the Market Place until 1852. It commemorates the Battle of Boroughbridge in 1322 when Thomas Earl of Lancaster [who was far too friendly with the Scots] was defeated by Edward II's general, Sir Andrew Harcla. The cottage behind is a typical Vale of York half timbered job and is probably 17thC.
