Text Appearing Before Image: seven southern counties of the State, namely, Los Angeles,Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura and SantaBarbara. The area of this section is about equal to that of Pennsyl-vania, and nearly as large as England. The population, in 1880,was 64,371, or 7*4 per cent, of the population of the State. In 1890it was 201,352, or 167^ per cent, of the population of the State.Today it is 335,600, or more than 20 per cent of the population ofCalifornia. The growth of this section has, indeed, been most re-markable. One of the most noteworthy features of the development ofSouthern California during the past few years has been the utiliza-tion of an abundant subterranean water supply, which was not pre-viously known to exist. Southern California can no longer withjustice be referred to as a semi-arid section. It is estimated thatduring the past three years over 75.000 inches of water have beendeveloped from underground sources, an amount sufficient to irrigate500,000 acres of land.
