Description: The remains of Old Thirlestane Castle The ruined remains of a 16th century tower house to the west of Boondreigh Water, and the possible site of an early Maitland residence. The tower seems to have been originally oblong on plan and at least three storeys high. It was built shortly before 1572, when it was attacked and burnt by Alexander Home of Crosbie. Rebuilding took place when a stair-turret was added to the west wall, converting the building into a T-plan. (Source: Pevsner Architectural Guides - Borders).
