Description: Photograph of the audience in the hall in which the opening of the Second Zionist Congress took place, in Basel, Switzerland, on 28 August 1898. On the podium, center stage, Dr. Binyamin Ze'ev (Theodor) Herzl is seen indistinctly, giving the keynote address. On Herzl's left is Max Nordau, and to his right, Dr. Mandelstam. On the wall in the gallery hall the flag of the Zionist movement is seen - two blue stripes, a shield of David containing seven stars and lion. The name of the photographer, Robert Spreng is imprinted on the bottom right-hand corner of the photograph. On the back of the photo, Dr. Joseph Chazanowitz has added a hand-written note, identifying a photograph with the First Zionist Congress, but apparently this is a mistake, and the photo was taken at the opening of the Second Zionist Congress. This photograph was donated to the library by Dr. Chazanowitz, early twentieth century.
