Description: Example of a tubular lava helictite, from a Hawaiian lava tube. This began as a tubular lava stalactite, a hollow tube that grows from molten lava pushed by gases from within a semi-solid ceiling. Subsequently, uneven crystallization of the molten lava coming through the tube causes growth that is non-gravitometric (i.e., not guided simply by gravity).
