Benjamin Franklin was the first president of the Board ofTrustees, being elec:ed in 1749 and serving in that capacity until1756. and again from 1781) to 1790. It will be seen, then, that it was during the administration ofProvost Stille that the University moved to West Philadelphiaand a period of i)hysical expansion ensued which has continuedduring forty years, at the beginning of which, or in 1873, theUniversity may be said to have entered upon a new era.
