Description: Introduced warm-season perennial loosely tufted hairy grass; stolons are often present; stems are ascending to erect, to 100 cm tall and sometimes root at the lower nodes. Leaves are to 11 mm wide and hairy, with wavy margins. Flowerheads are a primary axis of racemes with 3-7 branches. Spikelets are evenly arranged in 2 rows, 4-5 mm long, 2-flowered and hairy; lower glume is more than half the spikelet length and usually has 1–3 stiff hairs on the midnerve; lower lemma is male or sterile and fringed with hairs; upper lemma is fertile and has a 0.5-1 mm awn at its apex and horizontal ridges on its back. Flowers in summer. A native of Africa, it is a naturalised pasture grass and also grows on disturbed sites, especially where the soil is fertile. Has good drought tolerance and prefers well-drained soils. Establishes very quickly and is very grazing tolerant. Very palatable when young and still more preferred than most other tropical grasses when mature.
