Description: WW2 Seagull trench at former RAF Stoke Orchard The 'seagull trench' is a type of airfield defence pillbox built here near the perimeter track of what was once RAF Stoke Orchard in the period 1940-41. Numerous examples exist across the country although it appears no two are the same. It gets its name from the shape of the pillbox which in plan is like a seagull's wing (a wide vee). Largely of brick construction it has a reinforced concrete roof. In the background is a new fence running alongside the railway line and the old level crossing keeper's house near the site of the long defunct Cleeve railway station.
