The lower part of the arms show seven basalt pillars, symbolising the volcanic origin of the Westerwald, which can be found in seven municipalities (Verbandsgemeinden) in the district. The jug in the upper part symbolises the formerly important pottery industry in the district. The bendlet vert symbolises the landscape of the district.
