Description: This shed was built in 1874. It is the last one left intact in the Netherlands, where once there were about 150 of them along the rivers. Every day measurements of the water level were made from here. Inside is still the refined instrument that has an open connection with the river and records its movements on a role of paper. Up until 1989 this level was noted down every morning at eight by the official observer of the Executive Body of what is today the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. The observers longest in function were Mrs. Cornelia Ewijk from Vuren (40 years of service) and Mr. Wim de Fockert from Herwijnen (30 years). Now, a computer is responsible for recording the water level in the Dutch rivers. The cottage is owned by the Foundation for the Conservation of the Water Level Recording Cottage. This information was translated from the information panel on site of the Royal Dutch Touring Club (ANWB). – This shed stand on the dike bordering the river Waal between Gorichem and Zaltbommel, Gelderland Province, Netherlands, opposite the village of Brakel.
