Description: West Gate Towers and Museum, St Peter's Street, Canterbury, Kent. Fine mid nineteenth-century artwork statue of Knight Templar Almaric (or Aymeric) de St Maur (alive in 1215 AD). This is a six-foot painted plaster-cast maquette, dated 1840-1870, and one of 17 originals made by various sculptors as prototypes for the bronzes around the Lords Chamber in the Palace of Westminster. As a group they represent the 15 barons and 2 bishops who signed the Magna Carta. As of February 2010, two of these survive in good condition in the museum. The remaining 15 have languished hidden for 100 years in the ground-floor room of the north tower, subject to flooding and needing rescue and restoration (information from the Museum of Canterbury, later renamed as w:Canterbury Heritage Museum).
