Description: Whitchurch Canonicorum: the shrine of St. Wite The 519406 is the only church in England apart from Westminster Abbey to possess the remains of a saint. Little is known of her, but tradition has it that St. Wite (or St. Candida), who gives the church its dedication and the village its name, was a Saxon woman who was killed by the Danes one time that they landed at Charmouth, in the ninth century. Her shrine, in the northern part of the church, has been a destination of pilgrimage for centuries and limbs or garments of the sick would be placed into the oval openings in the hope of healing. Today, there were many prayer requests left within the openings.
