Description: Portret of Jacobus Hendricksz Zaffius, the Catholic archdeacon for the underground Catholics of Haarlem. An old man at the time the painting was made, he witnessed the siege of Haarlem and the subsequent loss of the central Haarlem Catholic St. Bavo Cathedral to the Protestants. Though still active for the Catholic underground church, he was tolerated and not harassed by the Haarlem council. He sponsored 5 rooms for the Frans Loenen Hofje in 1609, which was memorialized with a plaque that states "Quinque camera a praeposito Zaffio Fundate A.1609".
