Ira Allen Haynes was an important officer in the United States Army. He lived from 1859 to 1955. He was part of the army during the late 1800s and early 1900s. He also served in World War I.

Early Life and Military Training

Ira Allen Haynes was born in Kentucky on September 10, 1859. He went to a special school called the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point. He finished his studies there in 1883.

Joining the Artillery

After West Point, Haynes became an officer in the Third Artillery. This was a branch of the army that used large guns. Later, he moved to the Coast Artillery. This part of the army protected coastlines with big cannons.

In 1888, he finished his training at the Artillery School. He also served in the Virginia State Militia in 1893. This was a local military group.

Where He Served

Haynes was stationed in different places during his career.

  • He served at the Washington Barracks from 1893 to 1895.
  • From 1899 to 1900, he was in Honolulu, Hawaii.
  • He also served in the Philippines from 1907 to 1909.

From 1913 to 1916, Haynes was in charge of the Coast Artillery School at Fort Monroe. This school taught soldiers how to use coastal defenses.

World War I Service

On August 5, 1917, Ira Allen Haynes was promoted. He became a brigadier general. This is a high rank in the army. He then led the 64th Field Artillery Brigade at Camp Beauregard.

Serving in France

From 1918 to April 1919, General Haynes went to France. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces. These were the American soldiers who fought in Europe during World War I.

After the War

After returning from France, Haynes took command. He led the Ninth Coast Artillery District in San Francisco. His promotion to brigadier general was made permanent. He officially retired from the army in 1923.

Later Years

Ira Allen Haynes lived a long life. He was the very last person alive from his graduating class at West Point. He passed away in Menlo Park, California, on February 24, 1955.
