John Donnelly is an Irish farmer who became the leader of a big group called the Irish Farmers' Association (IFA). He was their President from 1994 to 1998. The IFA helps farmers in Ireland with their work and challenges.

John Donnelly: A Farmer's Story

Early Life and Education

John Donnelly was born in a place called Conicare, near Abbey in County Galway, Ireland. He went to a local school for his early education. He also spent a short time studying at St. Molaisses College in Portumna.

Joining Farmers' Groups

John Donnelly was always interested in farming and helping other farmers. He joined a youth farming group called Macra na Feirme. In 1975, he won a big debating competition for the whole country with this group.

Rising Through the Ranks

In 1977, John joined the Irish Farmers' Association (IFA). Soon after, he became the leader of his local branch. He then helped lead the IFA in County Galway from 1981 to 1984. From 1984 to 1988, he was a Vice President for the Connacht region.

Leading the Farmers' Association

In 1994, John Donnelly made history. He became the first person from the west side of the Shannon River to be the President of the IFA. This was a very important role.

Helping Farmers in Need

As President, John worked hard for farmers. He helped make sure that all of County Galway was seen as a difficult area for farming. This helped poorer farmers get more financial support. His time as President ended in 1998.

After His Presidency

Even after being President, John Donnelly stayed involved in farming. He helps promote good quality beef from the south-east part of County Galway. This means making sure the beef is safe and healthy.

Helping Others in Galway

John also spends his time helping people with cancer. He works with an organization called Cancer Care West. He helps raise money to support cancer patients in Galway.
