Justin Tipuric (born August 6, 1989) is a famous Welsh rugby player. He used to play for the Welsh national team as an openside flanker. This means he played a key role in the team, helping to win the ball and tackle opponents.

Justin Tipuric's Early Life

Justin Tipuric was born in a village called Alltwen, even though he grew up in Trebanos. His family has roots in Croatia.

Justin's dad loved rugby and was even the captain of Trebanos RFC, a local rugby club. Justin and his younger brothers all started playing rugby at this club. His mother always made sure he wore a Scrum cap for safety. Because of this, Justin has always worn a special blue scrum cap, which are the traditional colours of Trebanos.

Playing for Clubs

Justin Tipuric plays for the Ospreys, a professional rugby team in Wales. Before joining the Ospreys, he played for Aberavon RFC.

He played his first game for the Ospreys on November 5, 2009. Since then, he has played over 170 games for the team. A big moment was in May 2012, when he started in the game where the Ospreys won the Magners League title against Leinster. Justin became the captain of the Ospreys team for the 2018/19 season.

Playing for Wales

Starting His International Journey

In June 2011, Justin was chosen for the Welsh national team's training squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. However, he didn't make it into the final team that year.

He made his first official game for Wales on August 20, 2011, playing against Argentina. He also played for the Wales Rugby Sevens team in 2010-2011.

British & Irish Lions Tours

After playing very well in the 2013 Six Nations Championship, Justin was picked by coach Warren Gatland to join the British & Irish Lions team for their tour to Australia in 2013. This is a special team made up of the best players from Wales, England, Scotland, and Ireland. He also toured with the Lions in 2017 and 2021.

Rugby World Cups and Important Games

In August 2015, Justin was again named in the Welsh training squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. He played in warm-up games against Ireland and even scored tries in both matches. One of his tries was even nominated for the World Rugby Try of the Year award!

He was chosen for the final 31-player squad for the World Cup. Even though he was in great form, he didn't always start games because the team captain, Sam Warburton, returned. However, Justin played in all five of Wales' games during the tournament. He scored a try in the big 54–9 win against Uruguay.

In 2016, Justin played in all five games of the 2016 Six Nations Championship. In the final game against Italy, he got a serious concussion. This meant he had to take a three-month break from rugby to recover, missing the summer tour to New Zealand.

After recovering, Justin returned to play in the 2016 end-of-year rugby union internationals. He started in three games, including a fantastic performance where he scored a try and was named man of the match against South Africa. He continued to play for Wales in the 2017 Six Nations Championship.

Retirement from International Rugby

On May 20, 2023, Justin Tipuric announced that he would be retiring from playing for the Welsh national team. He will, however, continue to play for his club team, the Ospreys.
