Anne Karin Thorhus (born 23 June 1945), known by her writing name Kim Småge, is a Norwegian writer. She writes novels, short stories, and books for children. She is especially famous for her crime fiction.
Her big break came in 1983 with her crime thriller Nattdykk (Night Diving). This book won her the Riverton Prize, a major award for crime writers. Her books have not yet been published in English.
About Kim Småge
Anne Karin Thorhus was born in Trondheim, Norway. Her parents were Rune Sanfrid Thorhus and Hjørdis Wedø. She is married to Edvard Normann Rønning, who is a playwright.
She studied at the University of Trondheim. Before becoming a famous writer, she was the first female scuba diving instructor in Norway. She taught people how to dive safely underwater.
Her Writing Career
Kim Småge's first two crime novels were Nattdykk (1983) and Origo (1984). Both of these books feature a female diver named "Hilke" as the main character.
She then wrote more thrillers, including Kainan (1986) and Lex Love (1991). Kim Småge also wrote two novels for young people: Figurene in 1986 and Interrail in 1988.
In 1992, she released Kvinnens lange arm, which is a collection of crime short stories. Later, she created a new main character, a police detective named "Anne-kin Halvorsen." This detective appeared in several crime novels, such as Sub Rosa (1993), En kjernesunn død (1995), Containerkvinnen (1997), Solefall (2002), and Dobbeltmann (2004).
With her book Nattdykk, Kim Småge was seen as one of the first women in a new wave of female crime writers in Norway.
Awards and Recognition
Kim Småge has received several important awards for her writing. She won the Riverton Prize in 1984 for Nattdykk. In 1993, she received the Glass Key award for Sub Rosa. This award is given to the best crime novel in Scandinavia.
She also won the Palle Rosenkrantz Prize for En kernesund død. This award is for the best crime novel translated into Danish.
Kim Småge was also involved in organizations for writers. She was a board member of the Norwegian Authors' Union for several years. She also led the society Skandinaviske Kriminelle Selskap in 2001.
