Kings Throne Peak is a cool mountain peak in Yukon, Canada. It stands tall at 1,990-metre (6,530-foot) (about 6,529 feet) and is part of the Saint Elias Mountains. You can find it inside the amazing Kluane National Park.

This mountain gets its name because it looks like a giant throne! A big, bowl-shaped hollow, called a cirque, on its north side makes it look like a king's chair. It's a really unique sight.

About Kings Throne Peak

Kings Throne Peak is a famous spot in the Dalton Range. It's known for its interesting shape and the beautiful views it offers. Many people visit to hike its trails and see the stunning nature around it.

Where is Kings Throne Peak?

This mountain is located in the southwestern part of Yukon, Canada. It sits right above the south shore of Kathleen Lake. This lake is a popular spot for camping and outdoor fun.

Kings Throne Peak is about 7.2 km (4 mi) southeast of another mountain called Mount Worthington. It is also about 27 km (17 mi) south-southeast of Haines Junction, Yukon. Haines Junction is a small town often called the "Gateway to Kluane National Park."

You can easily spot the mountain from the Haines Highway. It rises dramatically, about 1,250-metre (4,100-foot) (over 4,100 feet) above Kathleen Lake. This makes it a very noticeable landmark.

What Makes it Special?

The most special thing about Kings Throne Peak is its shape. The large cirque on its north side looks like a giant natural amphitheater or a huge armchair. This is how the mountain got its royal name.

From this cirque, a "rock glacier" slowly moves down towards the lake. A rock glacier is like a very slow river made of rocks and ice. It's a cool example of how nature shapes the land over time.

Hiking to the Top

If you love hiking, Kings Throne Peak has a challenging but rewarding trail. The first part is a steep, five-kilometer path that leads to the "amphitheater" area. This is the bowl-shaped part of the mountain.

From the amphitheater, you can continue for another three kilometers on a less clear path. This path goes along the east ridge and eventually takes you to the very top of the peak. The views from the summit are amazing!

Climate Around the Peak

Kings Throne Peak is in a subarctic climate zone. This means the area has long, very cold, and snowy winters. The summers are usually mild, not too hot. This type of climate creates a unique environment for plants and animals in the park.
