The large niltava (Niltava grandis) is a beautiful bird. It belongs to a group of birds called Old World flycatchers. These birds are known for catching insects in the air.
You can find the large niltava in many countries across Asia. These include places like Bangladesh, India, China, and Vietnam. Large niltavas love to live in warm, wet mountain forests. They prefer places with lots of trees and plants.
Discovering the Large Niltava
Scientists like to organize living things into groups. This helps us understand how different animals are related. This system is called taxonomy. The large niltava was first officially described in 1842. An English zoologist named Edward Blyth did this work. He studied birds collected in Darjeeling, India.
He gave it the scientific name Chaïtaris grandis. Today, the large niltava is part of the Niltava group. This group includes six other niltava birds. Another English naturalist, Brian Hodgson, first named the Niltava group in 1837.
Different Kinds of Large Niltavas
Just like there are different breeds of dogs, there are different types of large niltavas. These are called subspecies. They are slightly different from each other. Scientists recognize four main subspecies:
- N. g. grandis: You can find this one from the eastern Himalayas to southwest China. It also lives in central Myanmar and parts of Thailand.
- N. g. griseiventris: This subspecies lives in southern China and northern Indochina.
- N. g. decorata: This type is found in central southern Vietnam.
- N. g. decipiens: This one lives in the mountain areas of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra.
