The Lincoln Goodale Monument is a special statue in Columbus, Ohio. It is located in Goodale Park. This monument features a bronze bust of a very important doctor named Lincoln Goodale. It was put up in 1888 to remember him and his contributions.
About the Monument
This monument shows a bronze bust. A bust is a sculpture that only shows a person's head and shoulders. This one shows Dr. Goodale wearing a suit and a bow tie. The bronze has turned green over time. This green color is called patina.
The bust itself is about 3 feet tall. It sits on a large granite base. This base is about 12 feet tall! A famous sculptor named John Quincy Adams Ward created the bust. The base was designed by Richard Morris Hunt.
What the Monument Says
You can find some words carved into the monument. On the bust, it says "J.Q.A. WARD / Sculptor". It also says "CAST BY THE HENRY-BONNARD BRONZE CO. NEW YORK. 1888". This tells us who made it and when.
On the granite base, it simply says "LINCOLN / GOODALE". There is also a special plaque on the base. This plaque was added on July 14, 1991. It reads: "Lincoln Goodale 1782-1868 This bronze bust was created in 1888 by Ohio sculptor J.Q.A. Ward in memory of Dr. Lincoln Goodale, the area's first physician."
History of the Statue
The city of Columbus and the people in charge of Dr. Goodale's estate paid for this monument. It cost $5,470 to create. The design for the statue was finished in 1887. The monument was officially dedicated on September 26, 1888. This means it was formally presented to the public.
