Becoming President of Paraguay
Luis González Macchi was the President of the Paraguayan Senate from 1998 to 1999. This made him next in line for the presidency.
A Time of Political Change
On March 23, 1999, Paraguay faced a big political crisis. The Vice President, Luis María Argaña, was sadly killed. This event led to a lot of tension in the country. The President at the time, Raúl Cubas, was facing many challenges.
Taking Office as President
Because of the political problems, lawmakers began a process to remove President Cubas from office. This process is called impeachment. Realizing he would likely be removed, President Cubas resigned on March 29, 1999. As the Senate President, Luis González Macchi then became the new President of Paraguay.
Leading the Nation
As president, González Macchi tried to bring different political groups together. He wanted them to work as a team to help Paraguay's economy. He hoped this would fix the problems caused by the political crisis.
Challenges During His Term
However, this teamwork did not last long. One major political group, the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, left the government in 2000. This meant President González Macchi no longer had enough support in the country's legislature. It became very hard for him to pass new laws.
Facing Difficulties
President González Macchi became less popular as the economy continued to struggle. There were even attempts to remove him from power. In 2000, there was an attempt to overthrow the government, known as a coup. In 2001, there was another attempt to impeach him. Both of these attempts failed.

End of Presidency
Despite these challenges, González Macchi stayed in office until the next elections in 2003. He could not run for a full term himself. This is because the Constitution of Paraguay does not allow a president to be re-elected, even if they served only part of a term. Nicanor Duarte won the 2003 elections. President González Macchi left office on August 15, 2003.
