About María Jiménez

María Jiménez was born in a neighborhood called Triana in Seville, Spain. This was on 3 February 1950. When she was 15, she moved to Barcelona. There, she worked as a housemaid.

Her Start in Music

María began her singing career in places called tablaos. These are special venues where Flamenco music and dance are performed. She first sang in Barcelona, then later in Madrid.

In 1976, she recorded her very first music album. A famous musician named Paco Cepero helped with the music. Her album had many different styles of Spanish and Latin American music. These included rumbas, tangos, and boleros. She also sang songs by well-known artists like Silvio Rodríguez. After this, she released more albums, including Sensación.

Later Career and Family Life

María's career became even more popular later on. She sang a song called La lista de la compra with a group named La cabra mecánica. She also released an album called Donde más duele. This album featured songs written by the famous songwriter Joaquín Sabina.

María was a mother to two children. She had a son named Alejandro. She also had a daughter, María del Rocío.

She was very open about protecting music from piracy. This means she believed artists should be paid fairly for their work. She even took part in a protest in 2002 called 'Day Without Music'.

Besides singing, María also wrote her own life story in a book. She appeared in several movies and TV shows. One of these was a sitcom called Todos los hombres sois iguales. She also hosted a TV program called Bienaventurados on Canal Sur.
