Mary Colleen Daly (born 1962/1963) is an American economist. An economist is someone who studies how people and countries make, spend, and save money. She is the 13th President and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. She started this important job on October 1, 2018.

The Federal Reserve is like the central bank of the United States. It helps keep the economy stable. Mary Daly also helps make big decisions about interest rates on the Federal Open Market Committee. Before becoming president, she was a top researcher at the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank. She joined them as an economist in 1996.

Her work focuses on how people get jobs and how money policies affect everyone. She has studied topics like wages, employment, and how money is shared in society.

Mary Daly's Early Life and Education

Mary Daly was born in Ballwin, Missouri. Her father worked for the post office, and her mother stayed home. She has shared that her family faced tough times when she was young. At 15, she left high school and, by 16, was living on her own. She worked hard at places like doughnut shops and retailer Target to earn enough money.

Despite these challenges, Mary Daly was determined to learn. She earned a GED, which is like a high school diploma. Later, she went to college and earned a bachelor's degree in economics and philosophy from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1985.

She continued her studies, getting a master's degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1987. She then earned her Ph.D. in economics from Syracuse University in 1994. She also did more advanced research at Northwestern University before starting her career.

Mary Daly's Career at the Federal Reserve

In 1996, Mary Daly began working at the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank as a research economist. She moved up through different roles in the research department. By 2017, she became the Executive Vice President and Director of Research.

Her research looked at how people find jobs and how government money policies affect different groups. She has written about fair pay, unemployment, and how to help people get jobs.

Mary Daly looks up to Janet Yellen, who is another famous economist. Janet Yellen was once the president of the San Francisco Fed. She later became the head of the entire Federal Reserve System. Mary Daly says her career really took off after Janet Yellen became her mentor.

On October 1, 2018, Mary Daly became the 13th President and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. She took over from John C. Williams.

Other Important Roles
