Miguel's Football Journey
Starting at Hércules
Miguel de las Cuevas was born in Alicante, Spain. He began his professional football journey with his hometown club, Hércules CF. At first, he played for their B team.
In the 2004–05 season, he was a key player for Hércules. His great performance helped the team get promoted to the Segunda División. This was a big achievement for the club after six years away from that league.
Time at Atlético Madrid
In 2006, Miguel signed a five-year contract with Atlético Madrid, a famous club in Spain. However, he faced a tough challenge right away. During a practice game in August, he got a serious ankle injury. This injury kept him from playing for over a year.
Miguel finally played his first game for Atlético Madrid on December 12, 2007. He came on as a substitute in a Copa del Rey match. In his first season after returning from injury, he played in 13 La Liga games. Most of these appearances were as a substitute.
Success with Sporting Gijón
On June 25, 2009, Miguel moved to Sporting de Gijón, another team in Spain's top league. This was a big step for him. He had a fantastic season in 2009–10. He scored eight goals, making him the second-highest scorer on his team.
He scored two goals in a game against RCD Mallorca and two more against Athletic Bilbao. He also scored a crucial goal against his old club, Atlético Madrid. This goal helped Sporting Gijón stay in the top league for another year.
Miguel continued to be a very important player for Sporting Gijón in the 2010–11 season. On April 2, 2011, he scored the only goal in a game against Real Madrid. This win was special because it ended Real Madrid manager José Mourinho's amazing record. Mourinho had been unbeaten at home in 150 league matches over nine years! Miguel played in almost every league game that season and scored six goals. His efforts helped his team avoid relegation again.
Playing for Osasuna
In January 2013, Miguel de las Cuevas was loaned to CA Osasuna. This meant he joined them temporarily. He played well, and Osasuna managed to stay in the top league that season. Because of this, his move became permanent in May. Both Atlético Madrid and Sporting Gijón received money for the transfer.
Adventure in Italy with Spezia
On January 29, 2015, Miguel decided to try playing football in another country. He moved to Italy and signed with Spezia Calcio. This was his first time playing abroad. His first game in the Serie B, Italy's second league, was on February 14.
In late September 2015, Miguel had to take a break from football. He had a health issue that required surgery. He was out of action for six months while he recovered.
Later Career and Return to Spain
Miguel de las Cuevas returned to Osasuna in February 2016. He played for them until July 2018. After his contract ended, he joined Córdoba CF in August.
In the 2018–19 season, Miguel scored nine goals for Córdoba. Even though he played well, his team was relegated from the second league. He continued to be a key player for Córdoba in the following years. In 2022, he scored 13 goals, which was his best goal-scoring season ever. His goals helped Córdoba get promoted to the third division. He was even voted the best player in his group that season!
