Miguel Ángel de las Cuevas Barberá (born in Alicante, Spain, on June 19, 1986) is a Spanish professional footballer. He is known for being a very flexible player in the midfield. He can play in different positions, like on the sides of the field (as a winger) or right behind the main attackers (as a second striker). However, he usually plays as an attacking midfielder, helping to create goals.

Miguel de las Cuevas started his career at Hércules CF. He played in 201 matches in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. During these games, he scored 18 goals for teams like Atlético Madrid, Sporting de Gijón, and Osasuna. He also played 127 games in the Segunda División (Spain's second league), scoring 16 goals. He even spent a year playing in Italy for Spezia Calcio in their second division, Serie B.

Miguel de las Cuevas: A Football Journey

Miguel de las Cuevas has had a long and interesting career in football. He played for many different clubs in Spain and even one in Italy. Let's look at some of the highlights of his journey.

Starting Out at Hércules

Miguel began his professional football life with his hometown club, Hércules CF. This team was in the Segunda División B, which is a lower league in Spain. In the 2004–05 season, he played a big part in helping Hércules get promoted. This meant they moved up to the Segunda División, the second-highest league in Spain, after six years away.

Playing for Atlético Madrid

In 2006, Miguel signed a five-year contract with Atlético Madrid, a very famous club in Spain's top league, La Liga. But he had a tough start. In August, during a pre-season match, he got a serious ankle injury. This injury kept him from playing for over a year.

Miguel finally played his first game for Atlético Madrid on December 12, 2007. It was a Copa del Rey (Spanish cup) match against Granada 74 CF. He played the second half of the game. In his first season back from injury, he played in 13 La Liga matches. Most of these appearances were as a substitute.

Time at Sporting Gijón

On June 25, 2009, Miguel moved to another top-tier team, Sporting de Gijón. He signed a four-year contract with them. Atlético Madrid, his old club, kept the option to buy him back in the first three years.

The 2009–10 season was a great one for Miguel. He scored eight goals, making him the second-highest scorer for his team. He scored two goals in a single game against RCD Mallorca and also against Athletic Bilbao. He even scored against his former club, Atlético Madrid, in a 1–1 draw. This goal helped Sporting Gijón stay in the top league for another year.

Miguel continued to be a key player for Sporting Gijón in the 2010–11 season. On April 2, 2011, he scored the only goal in a big win against Real Madrid at their home stadium, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. This win was very special because it ended Real Madrid manager José Mourinho's long record of 150 league matches unbeaten at home. Miguel played in almost every league game that season and scored six goals. His goals once again helped his team avoid relegation.

Moving to Osasuna

On January 11, 2013, Miguel was loaned to CA Osasuna, another team in Spain's top league. His move became permanent in May after Osasuna managed to stay in La Liga. A fee of €1.2 million was paid for him.

Playing in Italy with Spezia

On January 29, 2015, Miguel left Osasuna and moved to Italy. He signed with Spezia Calcio in the Italian Serie B league. This was his first time playing football outside of Spain. His first game in Serie B was on February 14, 2015, in a 0–0 draw.

In September 2015, Miguel had to have surgery on his heart after doctors found a problem. He was unable to play for six months while he recovered.

Later Career Stages

Miguel returned to CA Osasuna on February 1, 2016, as a free player. He left the club in July 2018 when his contract ended. On August 31, he signed a one-year deal with Córdoba CF.

In the 2018–19 season, Miguel scored nine goals for Córdoba. However, his team was relegated from the second division. He continued to be a very important player in the following years. In 2022, he scored a career-high 13 goals. This helped his team get promoted to the third division. He was even voted the best player in his group that season!
