Naoto Sakurai (桜井 直人, Sakurai Naoto, born September 2, 1975) is a former Japanese football player. He played as a forward, which means he was a player who mainly tried to score goals. Sakurai spent his entire professional career playing for teams in Japan.

Naoto Sakurai's Football Journey

Naoto Sakurai was born in Saitama, Japan, on September 2, 1975. After finishing high school, he joined his hometown club, Urawa Reds, in 1994. He started playing in matches in 1995. He played a few games each season for Urawa Reds.

Playing for Tokyo Verdy

In 1999, Sakurai moved to Verdy Kawasaki, which later became known as Tokyo Verdy. Here, he quickly became a regular player. This means he played in most of the team's games. He was known as a forward who was very good at dribbling the ball. He played many matches for Tokyo Verdy for several years.

Later Career and Retirement

In 2005, Sakurai moved to Omiya Ardija. This team had just been promoted to the J1 League, which is the top football league in Japan. Omiya Ardija was also based in his home area. He continued to play many games for them until 2006. However, from 2007, he played very few matches. Naoto Sakurai decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2008 season.
