What is the National Register of Historic Places?

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation's historic places that are worth saving. It's part of a program by the United States government to help protect important historical and archaeological sites. When a place is added to the Register, it means it's special because of its history, architecture, or what it tells us about the past. It helps people appreciate and protect these treasures for future generations.

Cool Historic Places You Can Still Visit

Here are some of the interesting places in Burleigh County that are currently on the National Register of Historic Places:

  • Bismarck Cathedral Area Historic District: This is a whole area in Bismarck with many historic buildings. It was added to the list in 1980.
  • Bismarck Civic Auditorium: Located at 201 N. 6th St. in Bismarck, this building was recognized in 1976. It's a place where many community events have happened over the years.
  • Bismarck Tribune Building: You can find this historic newspaper building at 22 N. 4th St. in Bismarck. It joined the list in 1982.
  • Dr. Albert M. and Evelyn M. Brandt House: This house at 323 E. Ave. B in Bismarck was added to the Register in 2000.
  • Burleigh County Courthouse: The main courthouse for Burleigh County, located on E. Thayer Ave. in Bismarck, became a historic place in 1985.
  • Camp Hancock Site: This important historical site at 101 Main Ave. in Bismarck was listed way back in 1972. It played a role in the early history of the area.
  • Chief Looking's Village site (32BL3): Found at the eastern edge of Pioneer Park in Bismarck, this ancient village site was added in 1978. It tells us about the people who lived here long ago.
  • Depression Era Work Relief Construction Features at Double Ditch Indian Village Site State Historic Site: This site near Bismarck, along ND 1804, shows construction work done during the Great Depression. It was listed in 2014.
  • Depression Era Work Relief Construction Features at Menoken State Historic Site: Similar to the Double Ditch site, this location near Menoken (1.7 miles north of Menoken) also features construction from the Depression era. It was added in 2010.
  • Double Ditch Earth Lodge Village Site (32BL8): This ancient village site is on the left bank of the Missouri River above Bismarck. It's a very old and important place, listed in 1979.
  • Downtown Bismarck Historic District: A large historic area in downtown Bismarck, roughly bounded by Broadway and Thayer Aves., 5th St., the Burlington and Santa Fe railroad line, and Washington and 2nd Sts. It was recognized in 2001.
  • Florence Lake School No. 3: This old school building is about 10 miles north of Wing off ND 14. It became a historic site in 2011.
  • Former North Dakota Executive Mansion: This beautiful house at 320 Ave. B, E. in Bismarck used to be where the governors of North Dakota lived. It was listed in 1975.
  • Fred and Gladys Grady House: Located at 414 E. Ave. F in Bismarck, this house was added to the Register in 2006.
  • Oliver and Gertrude Lundquist House: Another historic home, this one at 622 W. Thayer St. in Bismarck, was also listed in 2006.
  • Menoken Indian Village Site: This very important site at 171 St. at 32nd Ave., NE. near Menoken is not just on the National Register, but it's also a National Historic Landmark! It was recognized in 1966.
  • Northern Pacific Railway Depot: The old train station at 407 E. Main Ave. in Bismarck was listed in 1977. Train stations were very important for travel and trade.
  • Patterson Hotel: This historic hotel at 422 E. Main Ave. in Bismarck was added to the Register in 1976.
  • E. G. Patterson Building: Another building connected to the Patterson name, this one at 412-414 Main St. in Bismarck, was listed in 1982.
  • Soo Hotel: The Soo Hotel at 112-114 5th St., N. in Bismarck became a historic place in 1983.
  • Towne-Williams House: This house at 722 7th St., N. in Bismarck was recognized in 1975.
  • U.S. Post Office and Courthouse: This important government building at 304 E. Broadway in Bismarck was listed in 1976.
  • Van Horn Hotel: The Van Horn Hotel at 114 N. 3rd St. in Bismarck was added to the Register in 1984.
  • Webb Brothers Block: This historic block of buildings at 317 E. Main Ave. in Bismarck was listed in 1983.

Places That Are No Longer Listed

Sometimes, a historic place might be removed from the National Register. This can happen if a building is changed too much, or if it's unfortunately torn down. Here are some places in Burleigh County that were once on the list:

  • Bismarck Public Library: This library at 519 E. Thayer Ave. in Bismarck was listed in 1977 but later removed.
  • Fire Hall: The old Fire Hall at 517 E. Thayer Ave. in Bismarck was listed in 1978 but is no longer on the Register.
  • James W. Foley House: This house at 522 6th St. in Bismarck was listed in 1977 and removed in 1994.
  • Liberty Memorial Bridge: This bridge, which crossed the Missouri River near Bismarck, was listed in 1997 but removed in 2009 because it was demolished in 2008.
  • Yegen House and Pioneer Grocery: This building at 808-810 E. Main Ave. in Bismarck was listed in 1977 and removed in 2011.
