Beaufort Historic District

The Beaufort Historic District is a large area in the town of Beaufort. It includes many old buildings and streets that show what the town looked like long ago. It's roughly bordered by the Beaufort Channel, Pine and Fulford Streets, and Taylors Creek. This district was added to the list in 1974.

HMT Bedfordshire Shipwreck

Off the coast of Beaufort, you can find the shipwreck and remains of the HMT BEDFORDSHIRE. This was a British fishing trawler that was used by the Royal Navy during World War II. It was sunk by a German U-boat in 1942. The wreck is now an important historical site underwater. It was listed in 2015.

Cape Lookout Coast Guard Station

The Cape Lookout Coast Guard Station is located on Core Banks at Cape Lookout. This station was important for helping ships and people along the coast. It was added to the National Register in 1989.

Cape Lookout Light Station

Also on Core Banks is the famous Cape Lookout Light Station. This includes the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, which is a tall, distinctive lighthouse with a diamond pattern. Lighthouses were super important for guiding ships safely to shore before modern navigation. This station was listed in 1972.

Cape Lookout Village Historic District

Near the lighthouse, you'll find the Cape Lookout Village Historic District. This area includes the old village where lighthouse keepers and their families lived, along with other buildings. It shows what life was like in a remote coastal community. It was added to the list in 2000.

Carteret County Home

The Carteret County Home is an old building located on NC 101 in Beaufort. It was once a place that provided care for people who needed help, like the elderly or those without a home. It became a historic place in 1984.

Fort Macon State Park

Fort Macon State Park is home to Fort Macon, a historic fort located on Bogue Point, about 4 miles east of Atlantic Beach. This fort was built to protect the coast and played a role in the American Civil War. It's a great place to explore history and enjoy the outdoors. It was listed in 1970.

Gibbs House

The Gibbs House is a historic home located at 903 Front Street in Beaufort. It's a beautiful example of old architecture in the town. This house was added to the National Register in 1973.

Jacob Henry House

Another historic home in Beaufort is the Jacob Henry House, found at 229 Front Street. This house also shows the classic style of homes from the past in this area. It was listed in 1973.

Morehead City Historic District

The Morehead City Historic District covers a part of Morehead City, mainly along Fisher and Bridges Streets. This district shows the historical development of the city, with many buildings that tell stories of its past. It was added to the list in 2003.

Morehead City Municipal Building

The Morehead City Municipal Building is an important building in Morehead City, located at 202 South Eighth Street. This building has served as a center for the city's government and community activities. It became a historic site in 2004.

Old Burying Ground

The Old Burying Ground in Beaufort is a very old cemetery bounded by Ann, Craven, and Broad Streets. It's a peaceful place where many early residents of Beaufort are buried, and it offers a glimpse into the town's early history. It was listed in 1974.

Portsmouth Village

Portsmouth Village is a unique historic site located at the northern end of Core Banks. It was once a thriving port village, but it's now a ghost town preserved to show what life was like in a remote coastal community. It was added to the National Register in 1978.

Queen Anne's Revenge Shipwreck

Off the coast of Atlantic Beach lies the shipwreck of the famous pirate ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge. This was the flagship of the pirate Blackbeard. Finding and studying this wreck helps us learn more about pirate history and life at sea. It was listed in 2004.

Salter-Battle Hunting and Fishing Lodge

The Salter-Battle Hunting and Fishing Lodge is located on Sheep Island near Ocracoke. This lodge was used for hunting and fishing trips, showing how people used to enjoy the natural beauty and resources of the area. It became a historic place in 2005.

U-352 Submarine Shipwreck

Another important shipwreck off the coast of Beaufort is the U-352 (submarine). This was a German U-boat that was sunk during World War II. Its remains are now an underwater historical site, giving us a look into naval history. It was listed in 2015.
