Becoming Mayor of L'Hospitalet
Núria Marín started her political career in her hometown. In 2007, she became the first deputy to Mayor Celestino Corbacho. A year later, in 2008, Mayor Corbacho stepped down. He left his position to become a minister in the Spanish government.
After his resignation, Núria Marín was chosen as the new mayor. She received 18 out of 25 votes from the city council. This made her the third mayor of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat since Spain became a democracy. She was also the first woman to hold this important role in the city.
Leading the City Council
In the 2011 Spanish local elections, Marín's party, the PSC, lost its overall majority in the city council. They had held this majority since 1983. The number of seats they held dropped from 17 to 13 out of 27. To continue as mayor, she formed an agreement with two councillors from another party.
Marín said that her main goals for this new period were to deal with the Spanish economic crisis. She also focused on managing the entry of a new political party into the city hall.
In the 2015 Spanish local elections, the PSC's seats dropped further to 11 out of 27. In November of that year, Marín made another agreement. This time, it was with two independent councillors. Even with this agreement, her party still did not have a full majority.
Views on Catalan Politics
In 2017, there was a lot of discussion about Catalonia's independence. Núria Marín asked the President of the Catalan Government, Carles Puigdemont, to confirm that he was not trying to make Catalonia separate from Spain. She wanted to avoid a special rule from the Spanish Constitution (Article 155) from being used.
Marín said that her party supported talking things out and a "federal" system. This means different regions work together under one central government. She also praised international businesses that moved their operations from Catalonia. She believed that businesses create wealth. She stated that many companies moving away was "very bad news."
In the 2019 Spanish local elections, Marín's party regained its majority in the city hall. They increased their seats from 11 to 14 out of 27. This was a big win for her and her party.
In the 2023 Spanish local elections, her party received the most votes in every neighborhood of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. However, they still lost their majority in the city council. On 22 May 2024, Marín announced she would leave the mayor's office on 15 June. David Quirós became the new mayor.
Other Important Roles
Beyond being mayor, Núria Marín has held several other significant positions. In 2011, she was chosen to be part of the Provincial Deputation of Barcelona. This is a local government body for the province. She resigned from this role in 2014 to focus on her duties as mayor.
In July 2019, she became the President of the Provincial Deputation. She was supported by her party and another political group. That same year, in November, she was also elected President of the Serra de Collserola Natural Park. This role involves managing and protecting the park.
In 2017, Marín was elected to a leadership position within her national party, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). She later became the president of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC) in December 2019. Two years later, the new leader of the PSC, Salvador Illa, appointed Miquel Iceta as president, and Marín became vice president.
In 2023, Marín left the Provincial Deputation. She was then named a Senator by the Parliament of Catalonia. This means she became a representative in the national parliament of Spain. In September 2024, Salvador Illa appointed her as the Catalan government's delegate to Madrid. This role means she represents the Catalan government in the capital city of Spain.
