Becoming Mayor of L'Hospitalet
In 2007, Núria Marín became the first deputy to Mayor Celestino Corbacho. When he stepped down in 2008, she was chosen to take his place. She received 18 out of 25 votes from the city council.
Marín became the third mayor of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat since Spain became a democracy. She was also the first woman to hold this important position in the city.
Leading the City Council
In the 2011 Spanish local elections, Marín's party, the PSC, lost its overall majority in the city council. They went from 17 seats to 13 out of 27. To continue as mayor, she formed an agreement with two councillors from another political group.
Marín stated that her main goals for this new period were to help the city through the Spanish economic crisis. She also focused on managing the entry of new political parties into the city hall.
In the 2015 Spanish local elections, the PSC's number of seats decreased further to 11 out of 27. Later that year, she made an agreement with two independent councillors to help lead the city.
Views on Catalonia's Future
In 2017, after a declaration of independence was made in Catalonia, Marín spoke out. She asked the President of the Government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, to confirm that he was not seeking to separate from Spain. This was to prevent the Spanish government from taking special control measures.
Marín emphasized that her party supported talking things through and a federal system for Spain. She also said it was good that international businesses were moving their operations from Catalonia. She believed that businesses create wealth, and many companies leaving was "very bad news."
Regaining Majority and Leaving Office
In the 2019 Spanish local elections, Marín's party regained its majority in the city hall. They increased their seats from 11 to 14 out of 27. This was a significant win for her and her party.
In the 2023 Spanish local elections, her party received the most votes in every neighborhood of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. However, they did not win enough seats to have a majority on their own.
On 22 May 2024, Marín announced that she would step down as mayor on 15 June. David Quirós then became the new mayor of the city.
Other Important Roles
In 2011, Núria Marín was chosen to be a member of the Provincial Deputation of Barcelona. This is a local government body that helps manage the province. She resigned from this role in December 2014 to focus on her work as mayor.
In July 2019, she became the President of the Provincial Deputation. She received support from her own party and another group called Together for Catalonia. In November of that year, she also became the President of the Serra de Collserola Natural Park.
Roles in Her Political Party
In 2017, Marín was elected to a leadership position within the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). This is the larger national party that her regional party, the PSC, is part of.
In December 2019, she became the President of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC). She held this role until December 2021. Later, in 2021, she became the vice president of the party.
Moving to National and Regional Government
In 2023, Marín left the Provincial Deputation. She was then named a Senator by the Parliament of Catalonia. This meant she would represent Catalonia in the national parliament in Madrid.
In September 2024, Salvador Illa, the leader of the Catalan government, appointed her to a new role. She became the Catalan government's delegate to Madrid. This role involves representing Catalonia's interests in the capital city of Spain.
