The Ochraceous Bulbul (say "oh-KRAY-shus BUL-bul") is a cool little songbird that lives in the forests of Southeast Asia, including places like Sumatra. It's part of the bulbul family, which are known for their lively songs and calls. You'll usually find this bird hanging out in the middle parts of tall, green rainforests, often up to 1,500 meters (about 5,000 feet) high!
About the Ochraceous Bulbul's Family Tree
Scientists like to group animals together based on how they are related. This helps us understand them better! The Ochraceous Bulbul is part of a group called Alophoixus. Before 2009, scientists thought it belonged to a different group called Criniger.
This bird has a few other names too! Sometimes people call it the brown white-throated bulbul or the ochraceous bearded-bulbul.
Different Types of Ochraceous Bulbuls
Just like people from different parts of the world might look a little different, animals can have different types within the same species. These are called subspecies. There are six known subspecies of the Ochraceous Bulbul:
- A. o. hallae - Found in southern Vietnam.
- A. o. cambodianus - Found in eastern Thailand and south-western Cambodia.
- A. o. ochraceus - Found in southern Myanmar and south-western Thailand.
- A. o. sordidus - Found on the central Malay Peninsula.
- A. o. sacculatus - Found on the southern Malay Peninsula.
- A. o. sumatranus - Found in western Sumatra.
